SJVC’s Criminal Justice: Corrections training prepares graduates for a career in Corrections.
Our program includes instruction in criminal law, evidence collection and preservation, report writing, institutional corrections, physical agility training, defensive tactics and weaponless defense. Many graduates initially find work in security and develop entry-level work experience while they pursue employment as a correctional officer.
Our graduates earn the following certifications:
Our Adult Academy is STC certified through the Board of State and Community Corrections and includes over 82 hours of additional course content beyond the state’s minimum, including First Aid and CPR certification and field trips to correctional facilities.
Learn how to identify and react to illegal activity. Practice correct approach, restraint and arrest procedures.
Train to use firearms safely and effectively. Learn the advantages and limitations of firearm use, in addition to shooting principles.
Learn how to conduct searches and safely handle and collect evidence.
* Effective January 1, 2020, BSIS Exposed Firearms Permits may only be issued to applicants who are 21 years of age or older. In either case students can return to re-take the Firearms Range Qualifications Training when they meet the age requirement at no additional cost.)
