Dental Hygiene Career Training
San Joaquin Valley College’s 16 month, ADA-CODA accredited Dental Hygiene program prepares students to work as registered dental hygienists. SJVC offers small class sizes, one-on-one tutoring by a dedicated and caring faculty, and an on-site dental hygiene clinic where students get hands-on clinical experience.
Graduates of SJVC’s Dental Hygiene program earn an Associate of Science degree and are eligible to take the National Board written examination and a State and/or Regional Board Examination for licensure as a Registered Dental Hygienist.
Study the oral structural formation, clinical recognition of normal oral structures, and oral anatomy relative to the proper dental hygiene procedures. Learn the pathological processes of inflammation, degeneration, and healing and repair.

Digital & Traditional X-Ray Techniques
Local Anesthesia
Learn to distinguish the normal anatomical features of the oral cavity as they appear radiographically. Also learn normal and pathological conditions, placing film for x-rays, and analyzing the quality of exposed radiographs.
Learn the pharmacology and physiology of local anesthetic agents and their proper use in dental hygiene therapy. Study the anatomy of the Trigeminal nerve, the physiology of nerve conduction and the mode of action of local anesthetic agents.

Dentist Supervised Training
Students practice taking impressions, giving local anesthesia and more under the direct supervision of a licensed dentisit. SJVC’s fully equipped dental clinic is the ideal setting to familiarize students with the instruments and equipment they’ll use daily in their new careers.
Train on Real Patients
SJVC dental clinics provide free dental care to the public. After learning how to perform dental hygiene treatments, you will be able to apply those skills on real patients under the direct supervision of a licensed dentists.
